Do you find that you’re working more and having less fun? You’re not alone! Here’s our tips to making the most of your life…
Let’s be honest, life is short. Working is all fine and good, but if you’re looking at your reality and wondering about how the fuck you don’t get to have fun any more then don’t worry, we’ve got your back.
Sure, business doesn’t sleep. And if you’ve got a schedule that is packed from now til next summer; how do you find time to do simple things like go to a gig, have a holiday or even spend time with friends and family?
As we here at Global Playboy are all about enjoying life, even if you don’t really have the time for it, we thought we’d share some of our tips.
Make Time
OK so the guy who invents the machine that can make extra time will be a billionaire in a minute, in the meantime we just have to make do with what we got right?
Here’s how.
Identify the tasks that you can delegate or that don’t need to be done. Then, drop them or delegate them. That easy.
Too many people take on a massive workload and then find themselves working until they’re ready to crack. I should know, I used to be one of them.
But here’s the thing. When you look at your schedule, like really look, how much of that is truly important. Meetings here? Video conferences there? Got to go fly to Tokyo for a one day meeting with a possible client?
When you take a step back and look at your schedule and ask yourself, ‘does that really need doing?’, ‘Can somebody else do that?’ then you’ll often find a lot of opportunity to make time.
Do yourself a favour and learn to say ‘no’ more.
Time is more Valuable than Money
You can always make more money, but you’ll never get more time.
Unless you’re in the throes of a very important stage of development with your business, you can probably schedule an opportunity to get the funk outta dodge for a bit. So do it.
Even if you put an entry in your diary to go for a long walk in the country, or a short break with a loved one to a town nearby, you’ll be doing yourself a massive favour.
Enjoying more of your life means taking the time to do the things that life is for. That is… Enjoyment.
Sign up for a ski trip with friends, take your family to a small house in the country with no WiFi. Treat your time like a commodity that is more valuable than money… Because it is!
Put Your Phone Down!
That handy device that you carry everywhere, sure, it’s amazing. The world is smaller and we can do more from anywhere. Talk to anyone, research, read, have meetings, order food, book holidays… You name it you can do it from your tiny little pocket device.
And that’s part of the problem.
That smartphone of yours eats your time. When you could be talking to your loved ones face to face, you’re probably looking at the news or your social media right?
When you could be playing with your kids, or enjoying a meal with friends, you’re probably checking an email because ‘its important’. Right?
Put it down. Better still, turn it off. There is a time and a place for your smartphone… And that time isn’t ‘always’. The place isn’t ‘everywhere’.
Chase the Dream
Before you entered the world of work and real life, what did you dream of doing?
Did you used to dream of being a world class footballer player? Maybe you wanted to be able to chat to people in fluent French? Perhaps you had grand ideas of being a successful entrepreneur?
Stop being busy and focus on your goal.
OK, you might not be a professional athlete now (well, who knows, there are plenty of sporting late starters), but you can certainly sign up for a local club or course.
Your dreams are important because without them, life becomes a crushing cycle of tedium. Who wants to work 60 hours a week if the only reward is stress and frustration.
With a goal and a dream in sight, you’ll have something to offer your hope and optimism even when its getting a bit much.
Focus on Personal Relationships
Do you know what the biggest regrets of the dying are? A clue; it isn’t, ‘I wish I made more money’.
Most of the regrets of those on their deathbeds or at the end of their lives are that they didn’t spend more time with loved ones.
If you have a partner who you love then take time to enjoy their company, properly, not on your phones or in front of Netflix.
If you have kids, take time to enjoy their development and watch them grow up. Listen to their ideas, their woes, counsel them on life, BE THERE…
When it comes to friends, make time to chat to them and meet up with them. Just hang out. You don’t have to *do* anything. Meet for a coffee. Walk in the park. Talk shit while watching the sunset.
Enjoy other people, because that’s what life is about.
